TRAVEL ITINERARIES NAMIBIA - VICTORIA FALLS - 14 days

This trip takes you through the spectacularly vast country of Namibia and promises to show you the most fascinating sites. At Sossusvlei you will see the breathtaking sight of the highest sand dunes on earth. After Sossusvlei you will head to Swakopmund, with beautiful beaches and many activities like sandboarding etc. After this you will drive to Etosha National Park. Etosha is the famous national park consisting of large white pans and a few waterholes where you can view lots of game. Through the Caprivi Strip – the most African bit of Namibia – you drive to Victoria Falls. You can either stop for a detour in the Okavango Delta or Chobe National Park in Botswana.

Day 1
Windhoek - Namibia
Auas lodgeYou will fly to Hosea Kutako Airport in Windhoek. Windhoek is Namibia's capital and with its 150,000 inhabitants the biggest city in the country. The pretty town, beautifully situated in a valley, combines the architecture of a modern city with numerous buildings in the style of the German colonial era. Upon arrival at 14.00 you will receive your rental car and drive about half an hour to the Auas Lodge which lies in between the airport and the city in the middle of the Auas mountains. The area is known for its beautiful surroundings and amazing sunsets.

Day 2 & 3
Sossusvlei

SossusvleiOn Sunday you will drive the remaining 350 kms to Sesriem and you will stay in Sossusvlei Lodge. The lodge is located in the middle of the desert and at the entrance to the famous Sossuslvei. The lodge in itself is a highlight; the special rooms are in the middle of the desert where you will have your dinner right under the stars.
If you leave early to see the sunrise at the dunes, ask for a picknick basket instead of breakfast.

Day 4 & 5
Swakopmund
You will drive to Swakopmund in about 4 hours and stay at the 5-star Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Center. Swakopmund is like an oasis, surrounded by dunes at the sea. This charming german-style town is the place to be for the adventurous among us: dune surfing, quad biking, etc. Alternatively, you could just relax and enjoy the amazing scenery, lie in the sun sipping cocktails, or take a few gentle excursions like an oyster-champagne brunch in the dessert.

The hotel was once the Swakopmund Station Building, and is a striking example of German architecture. It was completed in 1901, during the period when the railway was the paramount means of transport and station buildings were important landmarks. Declared a National Monument in 1972, the building was meticulously renovated and returned to its former glory. The building finally came to life again in 1994 as a hotel with a sense of history. It once more welcomes travelers to Swakopmund.

Swakopmund is - at least in comparison to the inland - quite chilly. Due to the cold Benguela current, the water is usually too cold for swimming. Until midday, the town is often covered in dense sea fog.

Day 6
Outjo – Ombinda Lodge

In the morning you will drive to Outjo. It is quite a long day and there is a lot to see on the way so we suggest you leave early. You have to reach Etosha before sunset so Outjo is a nice place on the way. At Ombinda you can enjoy a meal at the restaurant or relax at the swimming pool and pool bar.

The next day we I would suggest getting up early again and drive the last hour to Etosha really early (6 am) so that you can see all the animals near the waterholes. It is another 1 hour drive to get to Etosha. You can have lunch at one of the three camps (Okaukuejo, Halali or Namatoni). From there on you drive to Mokuti Lodge, right outside the eastern gate.

Etosha National Park is famous for its salt pan and flatness. The wildlife will gather around the waterholes and massive herds can be seen.

Day 7 & 8
Etosha - Mokuti Lodge

Mokuti lodge
Mokuti boasts unique African charm combined with international standards of luxury. Each of the thatched chalets is air-conditioned and has en-suite bathroom, TV, telephone, fridge and hairdryer.
There are walking and mountain-biking trails available. Reptile Park and Bird Hide are located on the property.
Guests can relax in the bar, at the swimming pools, enjoy a game of open-air chess, snooker in the game room, play tennis on the lodge's floodlit tennis courts. Meals are served in the open-air restaurant with a choice of a-la-carte or buffet in the boma.

Day 9
Popa Falls

From Mokuti Lodge you drive further through the Caprivi Strip. The landscape will change drastically, it is very green and the little villages along the road give it a real African feel. You will drive to Popa Falls, on the border of Botswana and stay overnight where you can spend the evening overlooking the sunset at Popa Falls.

Day 10 – 14
Victoria Falls
Victoria fallsVic Falls, or Mosi-Oa-Tunya ‘Smoke that thunders’ plunge 300ft into a gorge seasonally hidden by a veil of roaring spray and spans the entire width of the Zambezi River. It is the 8th wonder of the world, and if you picture Niagara Falls twice as tall and wide, you still won’t be prepared for the spectacle here. The crocodiles patrol the deep pools, the hippos feed upstream and the elephants come out and bath in the river. There are several walks from the Zambian as well as the Zimbabwe side and many activities like rafting, lunches and sundowner cruises on the Zambezi River, helicopter rides, bungy jumping – you name it.

From Victoria Falls you fly back to Johannesburg or Windhoek.
